Your data is safe

25 May 2018

Four years of debate and preparation have culminated in the creation of the European Union’s (EU) new general data protection regulation (GDPR). It came into force at the end of May 2018 and has been designed to protect and empower the data privacy of all EU citizens, and to reshape the way organisations approach data privacy.

In preparation for its enforcement, Siwertell set up a working group to carefully analyse what kind of personal data it handles and assess its compliance with the new regulations.

“We would like to reassure all customers that we take data privacy very seriously,” says Katarina Åkesson, Siwertell’s HR Director and head of the GDPR working group. “Our data protection strategies have been in place for a long time and we welcome this new legislation to ensure that all companies take a similar approach.

“We always adhere to regulations and quickly update practices to ensure compliance with any new rules or updates, such as the introduction of GDPR,” she adds.

To highlight a few points, the new GDPR rules apply to all companies processing the personal data of citizens that live in the EU, regardless of the company’s location. Information issued by the company has to be clear and include some obligatory data, and companies are required to inform any person that it holds data for. People also now have the ‘right to be forgotten’, this is known as data erasure.

An organisation in breach of GDPR can be fined up to four percent of its annual global turnover or EUR 20 million, whichever is greater.
